Well, we had a busy day on the solstice yesterday. Derby had his final “puppy class” first thing in the morning. He did great though his enthusiam to see all the other puppies can be a little, well, enthusiastic. From there we went to watch River bowl at her rounders match. She played really [...]

River has been enjoying playing rounders recently.  She played on the team last spring as well, but this year she is the bowler.  In baseball terms, that means she is the pitcher.

They use these tiny little bats.

River’s coach mentioned to me recently how much they will miss having her on the team next year.  We [...]

We went on a ski holiday in the Dolomites in northern Italy at the end of March.  We flew to Innsbruck just across the border in Austria.  The descent to the airport was quite spectacular; the snow covered peaks are very dramatic.

Historically a mixture of Roman and Germanic cultures, the province of Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol has [...]

We’ve all been very busy recently.  Here are some of the piano pieces River has been playing recently.  Actually, I think she’s just been playing these from one of her books rather than learning them for her lessons.
Eine Kleine Nachtmusik
The Can-Can
We had been learning Spanish in Massachusetts, but the kids have started French at Foremarke.  [...]

I went to watch River play in her first hockey match this morning.  They played a team from another nearby school.  She was pleased to be asked to play on the team and I thought that she did pretty well picking up a new sport.

Sage attended a birthday party on Sunday at the local rugby club.  Some of the boys from her school play there weekly.  Like football, it is only the boys that play rugby, apparently.  Sage was the lone girl to come to the party, though everyone in her year was invited.

She was great and had a [...]

I always enjoy learning new vocabulary. According to wikipedia, exeat means “a period of absence from a centre of learning… [used] in Britain to describe weekend leave from a boarding school”.
The kids both had special activities at school on Friday to kick off the long weekend. Sage and her classmates sold cakes for [...]

Now that school has gone into full swing, the kids have started some of the extra-curricular activities. River is taking up violin in addition to her piano lessons. Sage is continuing with her cello and ballet and is planning to start choir and recorder group lessons.

River started playing hockey in PE. [...]

River played her first rounders match yesterday.   I was baffled by rounders at first.  It is a bit like baseball, but different.  Wikipedia has a nice description of rounders, if you’re interested in learning more about it.  I thought River played well, from my impartial perspective, but they lost by half a rounder.  I [...]

I’ve edited this posted because I’ve had some concerns that I might have inadvertently violated some copyright laws. Apparently, you are not allowed to photograph or video anything associated with the Premiership football clubs and as their stadiums are private property they are within their rights to prohibit photography. I discovered this after [...]
