Behind the Schweitzer’s house, a network of trails lead up into the hills. We followed one up to a tower with brilliant views of the valley in which Albstadt is nestled.

I was very impressed with the way the kids played together all week. To be sure, it wasn’t always a tea party, but for [...]

We went for a nice walk on the estate surrounding Calke Abbey with some friends on Wednesday. It was a beautiful autumn day and the photos turned out really nice. I hope you enjoy them too.

We spent quite a while balancing on the fallen chestnut logs here. I’ve always wondered what the [...]

On Sunday, we went to Speedwell cave in Castleton. The entrance is through an old lead mine tunnel. After descending about a hundred stairs, we boarded a boat once used to float the ore out of the mine. Apparently, the miners found that the shaft naturally flooded whenever there was a [...]

I’ve been a bit late posting some of the M&M trail hikes. I guess I’ve been a bit busy, you might say. So I’m combining section 7 and 8, from route 47 to the notch, and then from the notch to Harris Mt. Rd.

Here are the kids climbing around on rocks on the [...]

There is some nice scenery from the top of Mt. Tom, especially overlooking Easthampton. We also got a [...]

Today we made it 5.7 miles from route 202 to route 141 in Holyoke. It was another beautiful day, with some gorgeous views, especially from the basalt cliffs overlooking Westfield.
We saw a number of butterflies, including a Tiger Swallowtail, a Black Swallowtail, a Mourning Cloak, and a pierid, probably virginiensis, though I didn’t get [...]

We hiked 4 miles today on the fourth section of the Monadnock-Metcomet trail. It dumped buckets of rain just before we set out. We stayed mostly dry through a few sprinkles during the hike. Unfortunately, our house leaked a little as the roof was being replaced this morning. It looks like [...]

We did the third section of the M&M trail on Friday. Here are our intrepid hikers set to go with their walking sticks:

The spring wildflowers have really started to bloom. The purple trilliums were especially beautiful. We noticed several that looked to have been munched off just below the leaf whorl.
We found a [...]

We’ve just started hiking the Metacomet-Monadnock trail, a 114 mile hike beginning at the Connecticut-Massachusetts border, winding through the hills of western Massachusetts, culminating at the top of Mt. Monadnock in New Hampshire. The trail is conveniently broken up into short pieces which makes it possible to hike it with children. We’ve done [...]
