It is a short walk from Gail and Dave’s Scottsdale house to the undeveloped desert. Piles of granite, remnants of ancient igneous intrusions, are scattered across the landscape. They just call out to be climbed!
Quite a few of us scrambled up the crack and made it atop this boulder.
I came back later with my rock [...]
The kids got matching pajamas for Christmas, another tradition that they look forward to all year.
There were sixteen people here for Christmas this year, but Gail and Dave’s house accommodated us graciously.
This year, we decided to do portraits. The kids all wore their matching red Christmas outfits.
I thought the formal portraits came out pretty well.

We seem to have developed a tradition of visiting the train park while we’re in Scottsdale.
It’s been around for quite a while. Molly used to come here as a child. Although I’m sure some things have changed over the years, it seems like no one will ever tire of riding the train around the park.
I’m [...]
Well, it’s nearly the end of January and I’ve only just finished uploading my pictures from the end of December. I’m hoping to write several posts about our trip to Arizona in the next few days and catch up to more current events.
As you can see from our visit to the Grand Canyon, [...]
Last week we visited the Grand Canyon. Our trip coincided with the huge cold front of Siberian air that swept across the country.
The snow-covered rocks were very beautiful!
We were prepared for cold weather, but not precipitation.
The views of the canyon were remarkable despite the overcast sky. It must have been warmer at the bottom of [...]
It’s a good thing there are often beautiful sunrises in Arizona because we’ve been awake in plenty of time to see the sun’s rays emerge over the Superstition Mountains. We’re gradually becoming adjusted to the new time zone. I imagine we’ll be fully acclimated about when it’s time to return home.
Weaver’s Needle is particularly beautiful [...]
River has been singing in a chorus at school and I went to hear them sing carols last week. They sounded beautiful!
Some people here have been very interested in doll houses recently. Molly has been looking for a doll house for quite a while now and she finally saw one that seemed right. So we’ve made a couple trips to nearby specialty doll house stores to ensure the house is properly furnished. We’ve [...]
Last Sunday, we went to Cresswell Crags, a limestone gorge in northeastern Derbyshire with a number of caves occupied by Ice Age people. We had to wear helmets with lights when we went on a tour of Robin Hood’s Cave. Apparently, there is no evidence that Robin Hood actually used this particular cave, but it [...]
I went to watch River play in her first hockey match this morning. They played a team from another nearby school. She was pleased to be asked to play on the team and I thought that she did pretty well picking up a new sport.
