In winter, it snows because
that’s the season.

In spring, flowers come up because
that’s the season.

In summer, the sun shines because
that’s the season.

In autumn, the leaves fall off the trees because
that’s the season.

And that is the year gone by.

River wrote this poem for one of our favorite magazines, Spider, but realized after she’d written it that it wasn’t about the subject they had requested, so we decided to publish it here instead.

  1. Dear River–I know that I’m your grana and all that, but I have to say that I think your poem is just beautiful, both to look at and to listen to. I love the way you repeat the title in each little verse, and the phrase at the end just ties it all together so perfectly! It made me feel so good to read it! I hope that you will be writing more poetry! Thanks for putting it online! Love always, Grana

  2. Dear River,–I agree with everything Grana said. You have a real talent. I hope you can develop it as you grow older. Please post any other poems that you write.Love, Grammy Gail

  3. Wow, that’s deep.

  4. I love it! Can I share it with friends?
