Today we made it 5.7 miles from route 202 to route 141 in Holyoke. It was another beautiful day, with some gorgeous views, especially from the basalt cliffs overlooking Westfield.
We saw a number of butterflies, including a Tiger Swallowtail, a Black Swallowtail, a Mourning Cloak, and a pierid, probably virginiensis, though I didn’t get a positive identification.
We also got a nice panoramic view from the top of a tower midway along the trek. The ladder for this tower didn’t quite reach the ground. It was quite entertaining to watch the kids figure out how to get up to the first rung. There are some great shots of them climbing in the photo gallery. Here they are at the top.

We saw many of the same wildflowers as last week, including columbine, solomon’s seal, false solomon’s seal, birds-foot violet, and dogwood, among others. Here are some new ones:
