Tim O’Reilly has some interesting comments on education, especially regarding the impact of the freely available information.

You can listen to the podcast of this interview here:
Steve Hargadon: Tim O’Reilly on Web 2.0 and Education

“I think we’re in a lot of ways in a period of profound re-invention of education and how people get to learn since, really, the invention of literacy… I have to say, I’ve often been sceptical of formal education, because most of the really interesting people I know gained their education really in spite of their formal training rather than because of it.”

This is certainly an interesting and provocative comment. I agree that following your interests and dreams are paramount. I’ve found that the O’Reilly tech books are often not quite in-depth enough for me, and I prefer some of the publishers that tend to be a little more academically oriented such as addison-wesley. I think a good indication of this revolution in education is the rise of sites such as Make and Instructables.
